The pursuit of the Rainbow Trout, the quest to reach Ganesha’s far-flung birth place, a high altitude lake and a hike along a spiritual superhighway - the Dodital trek offers a high of lifetime. Set admist lofty heights and at an elevation of 3,310 m, Dodital is like a slimmering emraldset in the crest of majestic mountains: mysterious beckoning and divine. Dense wood of oak, pine, deodar and rhododendron fringe the lake and the crystal clear waters are full of spectacular fish like the Himalayan golden trout. Trout was introduced here about a century ago, transforming Dodital into an angler’s paradise. The trek leads through tranquil country, gugling streams with crystal clear waters and dense alpine forests, all blending together like a vast green sequined robe.
From Uttarkashi, its a 15 -kms drive along the curves of the Asi Ganga via little settlement of Gangotri to Kalyani (1829 m) and Sangamchatti where the trek starts. From Kalyani to Agoda is a gradual climb through woods, fields and villages on a mule track. While trek from Agoda to Dodital takes you through thick forests. The trail goes through a few passes, waterfalls and meadows until you reach Dodital, from where the route to Yamunotri takes you through high-altitude grasslands and dense virgin forests. |
DAY 1 : Haridwar – Uttarkashi – Sangamchatti (Drive/175 kms/6-7 hrs) – Agoda (Trek/6 kms/2-3 hrs)
Early morning departure from Haridwar for Sangamchatti via Uttarkashi. Sangamchatti is situated beside a tributary of Asi Ganga. From here cross the bridge over the side stream and follow the trail on the true right of the valley leading to Agoda. It is a steady ascent through deciduous to semitropical forest. As it approaches the village the trail is lined with rose bushes and hedgerows. Overnight in tents.
DAY 2 : Agoda – Dodital (Trek/16 kms/6-7 hrs)
The trail from Agoda gradually ascends through the forest high above the Asi Ganga before entering a side valley leading to Dodital. There is a substantial Gujar settlement at Majhi (3150 m) about 5 kms before Dodital. From Majhi it is a pleasant trek through rhododendron, oak, pine and bamboo forest around the hillside to Dodital. On arrival set campsite by the lake. Overnight in tents.
DAY 3 : Dodital – Darwa Top – Dodital (Trek/16 kms/5-6 hrs)
Today we will start early towards Darwa Top. The climb from Dodital is pleasant through flowered meadows. The rhododendron tree here remain in bloom until mid June. The final climb up the alpine meadows to the top is short and steep. One is rewarded with a magnificent view of the majestic Himalayas, once on the top. The range of peaks stretch beyond Gangotri as far as Nanda Devi. To the north, the Bandarpunch peak dominates the upper part of the valley. To the North-West, Swargarohini I (6252 m) rises above the Har-ki-Dun valley. Afternoon start retracing steps towards Dodital. Overnight in the tents.
DAY 4 : Dodital – Sangamchatti (Trek/22 kms/5-6 hrs) – Haridwar (Drive/175 kms/6-7 hrs)
Start retracing your steps towards Sangamchatti. It’s an easy walk as the trail is downhill all the way to Sangamchatti. From here drive to Haridwar. TRIP ENDS HERE. |
